To ensure your bins are emptied, follow these guidelines:

  • Place your bins on the kerbside before 6:00 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Make sure your bins are presented at least 30cm apart for collection.
  • Do not overfill your bins. The lid must close properly.
  • Ensure your bins do not weigh more than 80kgs each.
  • Place your bins on the kerbside (not the gutter or road) with the opening (Council logo side) facing the road.
  • Ensure there are no cars, trees or overhead wires blocking access to your bins.
  • Don’t park your car in turning areas on collection days to ensure the trucks can turn safely.
  • Remove your bins from the kerbside on the day, after they have been serviced.
  • When you move premises, bins must remain with the property. Do not take them to your new premises.

Tips for Windy Weather

Windy weather takes a toll on our kerbside bins, and no one likes having to chase their rubbish down the street on windy days. Here are some tips to help minimise the issue which you can try at home:

  • Minimise the amount of time your bins are out (bin collection services start at 6am)
  • Where possible, place your bin on flat ground
  • Leave reasonable gaps between bins (at least 30cm) to help drivers avoid tipping bins over
  • Bring your bin in as soon as you can after collection to reduce the risk of the bin blowing over and breaking or blocking the road or footpath.

Make sure to:

  • Never use bungee cords, bricks or rocks or other heavy items to keep bin lids closed. These can pose significant risks to passers-by and damage the bins, collections trucks and passing vehicles when the bin is lifted
  • Avoid overfull bins where possible
  • Collect spilled materials if your bin has been blown over, where safe to do so.

Lid Latch

Lid latches are a simple yet effective way to keep bin lids securely closed if the bin is knocked or falls over, most often caused by strong winds. They help to prevent waste from spilling onto the street.

These specific lid latches will not affect your waste collection service as the latches are designed to automatically release when they are inverted into the collection truck. These latches are suitable for bin lids with handles.
